MARCHES ON, & ON, & ON.....!

The following is a relatively brief run down of what led to Souths expulsion and final re-admission to the greatest game of all - Rugby League. It is not intended to be a continuation of the bitterness of the boycott that was strongly advocated here but a matter of fact. That fact can't be buried as it is a part of Rugby League's history albeit not a pleasant one and should not be simply swept under the carpet as if it never happened. (something they tried to do to Souths) You are talking of two years of 'pain' to South's supporters and we should remember, despite that, it is also now important to move on. Allow this page to be part of that memory and a reminder to the corporate world that whilst we embrace your support for our game we do not allow it to be taken away (or brought off) from it's true owners, us, the fans! To all that maintained the spirit which led to our return and not only that you guys and gals helped fund it also to the tune of approximately 2.5 Million Aussie dollars, thanks. This page however no longer lists the products and services of the 'boycott'.

I NOW 'OFFICIALY' DECLARE THE BOYCOTT SUSPENDED BUT REMEMBER IT IS JUST AS EASY TO RE-ESTABLISH IT!! (In fact many are continuing with it, which is an individual & understandable choice of course).

Souths are a founding team, 1908, and have the most First Grade premiership wins (20) in history and have been runners up (12) more than any other club yet that was not to count for very much when Mr Murdoch's News Limited walked in with his dollars to takeover the people's game, Rugby League, when he purchased a large portion of the National Rugby League (NRL) following his Super Legue failing. Many called it 'Super League by Stealth' which it basically was. He had certain ideals for the game which eventually led to South's expulsion from a game on 15/10/1999, which Souths helped create back in 1908. The thought that fans would simply change teams and still follow Rugby League was an error of judgement. From a Souths perspective you follow Souths first and Rugby League a distant second with a very strong emphasis on sport is about sport and the traditions handed down over time and NOT money. It is okay for players and sponsors to make a good living out of the game but not okay if that same money becomes so important we lose sight of the game or even stand to lose the game!

Unfortunately for him and the NRL they did not listen to us and a Rabbitoh scourned is not to be taken lightly. Souths are a family and you do not come in a kill a family without some form of retribution. Picked on the wrong 'family' mate! They soon realised this when we refused to accept his ideals and stood up and fought the battle of our (and Rugby League's) life which finally culminated in Souths being given a win in the High Court on 6/7/2001 thus showing that our expulsion was indeed wrong. This took almost two years to win and 3 major court cases.

It is indeed sad that virtually all of the other teams did not have the guts to stand up as Souths did because all the associated mergers (takeovers) and our wrongful expulsion just would not have happened. All it would have taken was only one or two oyher teams to say 'NO'. We in fact would be still following traditional teams like Manly, Balmain, North Sydney, Western Suburbs, Illawarra and Saint George and not the 'merged' entities. To further back up the errors of judgement many of these mergers are having severe financial difficulties and some may even fall apart.

Whilst we can ponder on what would have happened if Souths actually lost the case it is not necessary, thank God (and George Piggins!) and I am sure that is also the 'sigh of relief' at News Ltd and NRL headquarters strangely enough. Whilst on this thanks to Phil Gould a strong continual supporter throughout the fight (one of so many) as he actually asked Mr Moffett questions like this on National Television! Good on you Phil.

We all have to move on now and get on with playing football with tradition and pride. That is what we are interested in, not the money, but the 'guts & glory' win or lose. It is okay to remember and even not to forgive but do not let that not allow you to once again come back and follow your beloved Souths. It will take time (as you can see I am even struggling with it - smile). Two years of pain and bitterness will not heal overnight but hopefully now NRL will at least embrace Souths as it is still a win for them as 100's of thousands of Souths and disgruntled fans in general may now all come back to Rugby League. Silently I am sure the final win we had was a blessing to News Ltd and the NRL made more obviuos by our virtually immedite 'hurdle free' re-admission and no appeal of the decision. Common sense finally prevailed, they knew Rugby League was dying. If I have to thank you for something I do thank you for that.

Isn't it great to again be able to buy Rugby League Week (perhaps not the Telegrapgh - sorry told you it might take a while!), watch a game of footy etc. I know I have missed it and so now perhaps we can all enjoy it once again in what I hope will be a newly revived Rugby League which is now up to the NRL to run with what the people really want ensuring it's survival.

There are so many that are jumping on the Souths Band-wagon now that we are back. Fairly typical. Many of them never had any, or a good word, to say during our expulsion. They are not listed here!

This scrolling list is an 'honour roll' of all those people I had on the original boycott site as being supporters of Souths in some way and I continue to thank and recognise them. The list is by far not exhaustive and I apologise to anyone that is not listed. You all know who you are, equally those that chose to 'brush us aside' also know who you are - shame shame shame. (worse even are those that now all of a sudden are coming out with 'belated' support as that just shows a total lack of your own principles so please remain silent as we quite obviously can get by without your support, thankyou. To all those 'knockers' out there all I can say is why don't you take it out on what really has you angry and that is your own merged entity - you should have stood up too. I know that is hard without a George Piggins in your court but you could have tried harder to find one. (Sincere apologies to those that could not fight, due to lack of support, and in turn stood by Souths as a personal form of protest - my remarks are in no way directed to you) Anyhow enough of the negatives, which there are some under the circumstances of what has happened, and on with the honour roll - GLORY GLORY TO YOU ALL! - no particular order.

WHAT CAN WE, AS SUPPORTERS, DO FROM NOW?

Follow the Red & Green Commandments - all 20 of them:-

• Thou shalt never forget, maybe not even forgive, but must move on.

• Thou shalt join the South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club Limited - only A$25.00 - Check Souths site for current information!

• Thou shalt also join the South Sydney Leagues Club Limited - A$11.00 otherwise pensioners are A$5.50 - Check Souths site for current information! Leagues and Football Clubs are two separate entities!

• Thou shalt get others to join either or both the Leagues and Football Clubs.

• Thou shalt get to as many games as you can if not all. Even take some friends along.

• Thou shalt continue with strong support not just when winning but also when losing, there is always next week

• Thou shalt also join your kids (under 16) up to the Bunnies Club. There are 3 age groups available at cost of $16.00 each with varying give-aways etc - again check with the club for latest information.

• Thou shalt get a season pass which includes the price of membership (if already a member the membership price comes off the package!) - Check Souths site for current information!

• Thou shalt join your local Rabbitohs Support Group, they are everywhere eg Western Australia, Canberra, Campbelltown, Newcastle to name just a few. Can't find yours then contact the Club, look on this site, look on the sites linked on this page etc.

• Thou shalt, if you are eligible to vote, it is suggested that you then be actively involved with the running of your club and vote at AGM's etc. Take the time to research the topic and cast your vote. It can count!

• Thou shalt continue to buy 'genuine' South's merchandise (ensure the money goes to the club, not sure then ring the club before buying as many 'band-wagon' jumpers out there). Better still buy from the club direct or online. Percentage of sales have reverted back to NRL now we are back in the competition but that is normal for all clubs in the NRL competition. (I know it bugs you a bit but.....)

• Thou shalt promote Souths in general daily activities eg put a sticker on your bumper, talk Souths etc.

• Thou shalt get down to the club as often as you can, send them emails of support to fansay etc.

• Thou shalt actively support, by purchasing from, South's sponsors before their competitors and let them know why. They are sponsoring for many reasons but the main one would be to make a $ out of it and we need them to continue sponsoring us!

• Thou shalt never again be complacent as never want to be in a position that would see us 'booted' out again. We are being watched more than ever by the 'powers to be' so we must watch our own backs and get it right this time. (not that we had it wrong before of course)

• Thou shalt join the Rabbitoh's e-group and keep in touch.

• Thou shalt consider a donation now and then especially if you can't get to the club etc due to location? Also is a reasonably priced regional package available for those outside 100km radius of Sydney GPO - check with the club!

• Thou shalt realise that they need us just as much as we need them (other teams that is) for without the other there is no game to be had! NB - It is okay to go out there and kick some 'butt' in a nice friendly football rivalry sense.

• Thou shalt, above all, conduct yourself in a sporting manner befitting a South's Supporter and have fun not only at home games but also away games most importantly. Rivalry is okay but walk away from any other crap. (Try hard please?) South's do not want players or supporters that bring their name under a cloud. We are going to show the others how it is done and with PRIDE & TRADITION (something sadly lacking from todays game) - now where have I heard that before?

• Thou shalt not put crap on the webmaster for his commandments, they are just a guide, thanks.

THE TRADITION OF LEAGUE poem by Ken Jones....

During the fight back I got many emails of support. One had an attachment, a poem, by a Novocastrian (Newcastle resident) Ken Jones. It details Souths long history and is titled "The Tradition Of League" so I thought I would make it available (with Ken's permission, thanks) for download. It is a Word document and only 21kb. Finally this sticker says it all - How long have we waited to buy a sticker like this instead of fightback or anti NRL etc ones, much more positive? Now lets get on with playing football again with the usual South Sydney Pride and Tradition, something that is lacking following all that silly Super League stuff! The Resurection of Rugby League has begun, would be nice to have it as it was exactly as before but.........Oh, anyone tell you Souths are a STAND ALONE side and that makes the 2 years out of the competition somewhat worthwhile.

But always remember one thing:-

Otherwise the 'fightback' years will have just been a waste of time and money - UP THE RABBITOHS!
